How Does A Rotating Head Cutoff Machine Work?

A rotating head cut off machine is a type of cutting device that operates differently from a standard lathe.  In the past, cutting metal tubes depended upon a worker loading the raw material into a chuck and moving it around the stationary cutting surface.  This process, while functional, created a few problems.  For one thing, it was heavily labor-dependent.  Workers had to be trained to handle heavy, bulky material and operate the cutting machines safely.  Waste was fairly high and mistakes were common.  Furthermore, burring and nicking were problematic, since there was no real way to control the vibration of the metal tube as it was being cut.

Enter the Rotating Head Cutoff Machine.  By completely inverting the cutting process, tube cutting and chamfering became exponentially easier and safer, and, as a bonus, the final products were of far higher quality with better finishes.  Perhaps the most impressive part of the entire transformation was how simple it is to change from a traditional lathe system to a rotating head cutoff system with the right equipment.

The Rotating Head Cutoff Machine–A Short Introduction

At its simplest, a rotating head cutoff machine is a cutting instrument that operates on a rotating, servo-driven head that moves around stationary stock held in place by two chucks.  Because the head moves rather than the material, vibration is eliminated, and with it, burring, nicking, and inaccurate cuts.

However, there is much more to a rotating head system that this simple explanation offers.  For one thing, automating the cutting process allows you to automate every aspect of the production of metal tubes, from loading, cutting, and finish, to unloading, stacking and transporting.  With the installation of a rotating-head machine and a few accessories, you can set up a system in which metal stock is simply stacked at one end of the production line and then loaded, sorted in optimal order for cutting, cut to length (no matter how complicated and varied the order), finished in a single step at the same time as the cutting, then offloaded and sorted to be ready for transport.

This entire process, from start to finish, can be handled without any human intervention beyond monitoring and management, and can be guided through the use of MES software, so that every person in the production line is informed of all movements and decisions.  With this level of automation, you can remove dangerous interactions with raw materials and streamline production while, at the same time, greatly increasing your output.  This alone makes the investment in a rotating-head cutoff system a wise choice.
